This is a nine-month, benefit-eligible position with a salary range of $58,000-$62,000 per academic year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is a comprehensive four-year institution dedicated to empowering professional and personal growth to prepare students to be critical thinkers and lifelong learners. We encourage applicants with teaching and research experience in sociology who can teach courses in Introduction to Sociology, Social Inequalities, and other electives related to the candidate's area of expertise. The area of expertise is open; however, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the areas of Rural/Urban Sociology & Rurality, Public Health Policy, or Environmental Sociology. A focus on an applied sociological approach and the ability to teach Social Research Methods are a plus. The successful candidate will teach four courses per semester (4/4), including introductory and upper-division sociology courses offered by the Department of History and Social Sciences. Applicants will also be expected to participate in scholarly activities (such as research, publishing, and presenting at conferences), and engage in service to the discipline, department, college, and the University. Additional teaching or other responsibilities may be available over the summer/winterim depending on program, college, or university needs and the interest of the selected candidate.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Employing evidence-informed pedagogy practices to teach and engage undergraduate students within and beyond the classroom.
  • Collaborating with students and faculty on academic, research, and program-related activities.
  • Academic advising.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and assessment reports.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD in sociology or closely related field earned by January 1, 2028.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills related to sociology documented by a record of professional development, research, or publications.
  • Minimum of one semester (4.5 months) experience teaching sociology at the undergraduate level.
  • A record of research or a research agenda in the candidate's area of interest within the discipline.
  • Minimum of one semester (4.5 months) mentoring, advising, and/or leading undergraduate student organizations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville, founded in 1866, offers associate, baccalaureate, and master's degree programs in a broad spectrum of disciplines including: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; criminal justice; education; business; agriculture; and liberal arts. The Platteville campus is located in Southwest Wisconsin's largest community, which has a rich history rooted in mining —particularly lead mining —dating back to the early 19th century. The region offers excellent school systems, high-quality medical and hospital facilities, outstanding recreational opportunities, and vibrant businesses and industries. UW-Platteville serves as a cultural and educational center for the Tri-State region of Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

At the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, the Department of History and Social Sciences offers a rich, interdisciplinary education that empowers students to explore the forces shaping human experience—past and present. Programs within this department include: ethnic studies, history, international studies, political science, social studies education, sociology, women's and gender studies, pre-law, and cultural competence. Faculty and staff in the Department of History and Social Sciences equip their students through teaching, research, and service.

Application Deadline:

To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by November 7, 2026. Applications will be accepted until the position has been filled.

  • Letter of application addressing all required qualifications.
  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A statement of teaching philosophy.
  • Sample syllabi (introductory and upper division sociology courses).
  • Contact information (name, telephone, and email address) for three professional references, at least two of which should address the candidate's teaching.
